  • The goal of this lesson is for students to understand the unintended consequences that the Treaty of Versailles had on the Rise of Totalitarian Governments. The concept of Cause tells us that actions have unintended purposes or fail to achieve their purpose. This lesson shows that the Treaty of Versailles had both of these consequences.
  • Economic conditions in Russia, Germany, and Italy in the 1920's and 1930's led to the rise of totalitarian dictatorships. Fascism rose up in Italy under Mussolini, which inspired Hitler's more extreme form of fascism in Nazi Germany. Communism rose up in Russia after the Russian Revolution under the guidance of Vladimir Lenin and his Bolsheviks.

1.SWBAT define fascism and totalitarianism and how it relates to WWII. 2.SWBAT name the countries and leaders of fascism and totalitarianism. 3.SWBAT explain the how the types of government played a role in WWII. 4.SWBAT apply what they have learned to write an essay comparing and contrasting the rise of fascism in Italy and Germany.

During the 1930s, much of the world seemed to give up on their hope for a democratic solution to their problems and instead turned to totalitarianism, both in Europe and in Asia.
