Does anyone here have much experience using Overdrive for reading books
or listening to books on Apple portable devices? I've been through quite
a few tutorials on Youtube and Slideshare, so have some basic idea as to
how it works, but I'm more interested in some end-user feedback,
especially about the complexities and nuances. So don't send me on the
Google trek (been there, done that) :-)
The epub checkout and download for iOS isn't too different in how it
works on a Droid device. Registering with Adobe is the first hurdle.
Then I surmise after downloading, installing, and registering the Adobe
Digital Editions console for Mac OSX (did this for a friend's mom late
last month) or the Overdrive Media console on iOS devices (with Adobe
integrated) things work like they would *ceteris parabis* on a Windows
PC or on an Android device. I have experience with my Droid phone and
with my Nook tablet (sideloading epub library books from a Windows PC).
Am I right in that the iPod Touch is the only iPod that can display epub
and that a PC or Mac OS X intermediary is unnecessary for this one (just
like the iPhone)?
The part I'm having trouble getting completely clear is audio content. I
think that if you have a Mac OS X computer to send to iPod you are
limited to MP3 format audiobooks, which are limited in selection for
most library system Overdrive catalogs (in the US), because publishers
prefer the DRM of WMA files. This leaves Mac users out as far as content
goes. Using a Windows PC enables use of the WMA format. I think I read
that the iOS device must be formatted FAT32 to work with Windows using
Overdrive and iTunes for Windows. OTOH it is formatted HFS for use on
the Mac platform. Am I right? Yet some iOS devices can use Overdrive
Media Console itself on the device and cut out the computer
intermediary. But if this is done one might be limited again to MP3
files only (right?).
If one uses Windows can they put WMA on higher end iOS devices like the
iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad? If you buy an iPad can you use both a Mac
OS X machine and a Windows machine to sideload or do you have to choose
one or the other exclusively?
Then there's the odd way Overdrive runs parallel to iTunes to sideload
audiobooks to an iOS device. When this is done using Windows to load a
WMA audiobook to an iPod one must click some choice to enable manual
management of the device and its best to reduce the quality to make the
process go faster (since quality isn't as important for audiobooks as
for music). There's an on the fly conversion from WMA to a format that
the iPod can understand. Is this conversion done by the Overdrive
software or by iTunes? What I really would like to know is what this
format is ( perhaps MP3?)
Anyone care to contribute any experiences using Overdrive with Mac OS X
and/or an iOS device, or especially using Windows to sideload onto an
iOS device?
Another thought: If someone has Windows running in Parallels or booted
from Boot Camp, is WMA transfer/conversion then possible on a Mac OS X
machine using Overdrive?
Thanks very much in advance.
